Gut Aiderbichl is heaven on earth—not only for the 6,000 animals that occupy 30 sanctuaries under the Gut Aiderbichl name but also for the visitors who can play with the ponies, donkeys, goats, sheep, and the many other animals that roam freely throughout the sanctuaries. The visionary behind its conception is Michael Aufhauser, who in 2001 purchased a farm above Lake Wallersee in Henndorf not far from Salzburg, Austria. He needed land and stables to house his private horses and rescued animals. The rest is history. Gut Aiderbichl, a non-profit foundation, has a staggering 55,000 members, among them celebrities like Chuck Norris, Naomi Campbell, and Pamela Anderson, who sponsored a horse “Rupi” and a kitten named “Pamela.”

Gut Aiderbichl is much more than a sanctuary for abandoned, neglected, and abused animals. Its foundation is rooted in Michael Aufhauser’s belief that animals like humans are sentient creatures, which means they suffer, feel pain, and have the ability to perceive, reason, and think.

But that is only part of the story. Gut Aiderbichl reaches far beyond its moral conscience. The foundation advocates on behalf of animal rights and welfare in projects locally and worldwide and established the Gut Aiderbichl Academy to educate children, adolescents, and adults on animal husbandry, care, psychology, and ethics pertaining to animals. The knowledge imparted at the academy to today’s youth will help them become the animal activists of tomorrow. You will not only be inspired by the animals that have been given a second chance at life but also the caretakers who tend to the animals. Dieter Ehrengruber, a spirited manager, leads Gut Aiderbichl not only with flare but with heart and is perhaps Gut Aiderbichl’s greatest asset.

I remember my first encounter with Michael Aufhauser and his mesmerizing words that resonated in my deeper self, which inspired me to write A Heart for Baby about my own rescue effort, which changed my life. It is easy to fall in love with the beautiful countryside and sympathetic animals. Gut Aiderbichl touches the heart of not only the animals it rescues but of everyone who passes through its doors.
